Know What Is in the Air You Breathe.
Radon is invisible and odorless, so testing is the only way to know the level in your home. Envision provides professional short-term charcoal canister testing with clear laboratory results you can understand.
Winter Radon Testing Special
Standalone professional short-term charcoal canister testing for your North Jersey home.
You cannot see, smell, or taste radon.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter a home through cracks and openings in the foundation. It can be present in new homes, older homes, homes with basements, and homes without basements.
One home can have a very different level from the house next door. Testing the property itself is the only reliable way to know its radon level.
Long-term exposure to elevated radon increases the risk of lung cancer. A professional test gives buyers, sellers, and homeowners useful information for deciding whether follow-up testing or mitigation should be considered.
How your radon test works
A straightforward process designed to give you reliable information with minimal disruption to the home.
Schedule the test
Choose a convenient start time. We explain the closed-house conditions that need to be followed before and during testing.
Canister placement
The charcoal canister testing device is placed in an appropriate location on the lowest livable level of the home.
48 hours to 6 days
The device remains undisturbed while it collects a short-term sample of the radon present during the testing period.
Laboratory results
The test is submitted for certified laboratory analysis. You receive the measured level in pCi/L with clear guidance on what it means.
Winter can reveal a home’s higher radon potential.
When surface soil freezes or becomes capped by frozen moisture, radon in the soil may have fewer places to escape into the outdoor air. At the same time, heating the home creates a stronger stack effect: warm indoor air rises and escapes through upper areas of the house, creating slightly lower pressure on the lower levels.
The home can then act like a vacuum, drawing radon-bearing soil gas through foundation cracks, joints, sump openings, and gaps around utility penetrations. Because windows and doors are also normally kept closed, winter testing may produce higher readings and can help reveal the home’s radon potential under closed-house conditions.
Radon levels still change from day to day and season to season, so winter is not guaranteed to produce the highest result in every home. Testing can be performed during any season when the required closed-house conditions are maintained.
What radon results can mean
Radon is measured in picocuries per liter of air, written as pCi/L. Your laboratory result provides the measured level for the test period.
Lower measured level
This result is below the range where the EPA says homeowners should consider radon reduction. Future retesting may still be appropriate because levels can change.
Consider reducing
The EPA recommends considering steps to reduce radon in this range. Follow-up testing can help you better understand the home’s level.
EPA action level
A result at or above 4.0 pCi/L calls for follow-up testing. If an elevated level is confirmed, the EPA recommends fixing the home.
Short-term results reflect conditions during the testing period. Radon levels can vary from day to day and season to season.
Radon testing FAQ
Who should have a home tested for radon?
Homebuyers, sellers, and current homeowners can all benefit from testing. Because radon levels vary from property to property, a neighbor’s result cannot tell you the level in your home.
How long does the test stay in the home?
Envision’s short-term charcoal canister test remains in place for at least 48 hours and up to 6 days, depending on the testing plan and property schedule.
Can people stay in the home during the test?
Yes. Normal living can continue, but the home must remain under closed-house conditions and the testing device cannot be moved or disturbed.
Is winter the only time I can test?
No. Radon testing can be performed throughout the year. Winter is especially convenient in New Jersey because closed-house conditions are usually part of normal living during cold weather.
What happens if the result is elevated?
Do not panic. Elevated radon can be reduced. Depending on the result, follow-up testing may be recommended to confirm the level before arranging mitigation with a qualified radon mitigation professional.
Can this be scheduled with a home inspection?
Yes. Radon testing may be scheduled with a home inspection or requested as a standalone service. Contact Envision for the correct pricing and timing for your property.
